challenge

To design an object inspired by a community in the coffee-growing region of Colombia, which in turn was related to a local craft technique.
For this reason, a 15-day immersion was carried out in the coffee region where we had the opportunity to interview different craftworkers and see their work environment, their routine, and the culture that lies behind each technique.
solution
Lia is a floor chair inspired by the Colombian tradition of weaving bejuco baskets, whose community of inspiration was the Colombian craftsmen of the coffee-growing region, who have been doing this technique for hundreds of years.
The inspiration comes from the artisan technique, two important references were taken for the design:
- The low posture in which the artisans weave their baskets.
-The place that the fabric takes in the basket as an element that unites and gives shape.

As a side piece of the low chair, a magazine rack was designed, which follows the same line of design and inspiration.
Its form arises from the abstraction of geometric shapes from the silhouette of the basket and its concept goes into the main function of the basket, which is to store.
The colors used have been designed to allow the family of products to adapt to all types of environments.
Prototype
An approximate prototype of the final model was made on a 1:1 scale, using 3/4 inch metal tubing to generate the structure, the fabric that shapes the seat and backrest was made with a cream-colored cotton fiber, which through knots gives shape to the chair.
The fasting method used for the seat and backrest as Knot-based.
